17 years ago in September 2003, I became an auntie for the first time and funny enough, as I held her one of my first thoughts was I want to make her a dress. I had learned to sew when I was younger from my mother and grandmother but hadn’t done anything with it, or even thought about it in years. 3 weeks later when I was blessed with another niece, I knew sewing was back in my life to stay. I made dresses, pj’s, nighties…even the sheets and quilts for their cribs! My proudest accomplishment tho was making their flower girl dresses for my wedding in a smaller version of my dress.
Orders started trickling in as their moms would take them out wearing an outfit I had made and someone would want to know where to get one like it. I was working full time in residential property management, however, this led to a side business of alterations and custom clothing design orders; including making christening gowns from wedding dresses. When I didn’t have orders to fill, I made stuff and put on consignment sales at local craft stores and rented a kiosk in The General Store at the Mapleview Mall.
Fast forward a few years and in 2013 my husband and I decided to relocate from ON back to NL. We landed in the beautiful town of New Wes Valley and it didn’t take word long to spread that I did sewing. Once again, I had a home based business of alterations and custom orders. I learned very quickly that the downside of living in rural NL meant a 3 hour return trip every time I needed a spool of thread! This was not time or cost efficient so I decided to do something about it.
June 2016 the retail location of Star Creations was opened on a part time basis at The Laurie Complex. Demand and local support far exceeded my expectations and we’ve been expanding our services and growing ever since!
